How to grow in peat-free compost

Many of us are struggling with the transition to peat free compost, the quality of what is on offer to gardeners really seems to vary and with it the health of our plants. With this is mind the committee has arranged for guest speaker Nikki Barker from the RHS (pictured) to brief us on how to make best use of the new growing mediums.

Nikki is currently Project Co-Ordinator for the RHS Transition to Peat-free, working withing the science and collections department at the RHS. She has worked across a range of sectors within horticulture, including amenity, landscape and retail.

Prior to joining the RHS as Senior Horticultural Advisor in 2019, she was Commercial Manager and lecturer at Hadlow College. She has a keen interest in promoting the horticultural industry as a career to the next generation. Nikki is also a Governor of Capel Manor College.
